My older brother was an RPG fiend, so this was a definite staple of my childhood. i really like the paper mario games too but they feel more like rpgs where you can jump rather than platformers themselves the music and rpg mechanics get talked up a lot but i feel like people often overlook how good a job square did in translating platforming elements into an rpg. as a kid i was just like "oh cool another mario game" but as i keep revisiting it over the years, i keep finding more and more to like about it. This was the first jrpg i ever played and is probably why I'm still so into the genre. Nintendo, make Geno playable in Smash Ultimate, you cowards. It's completely worth tracking the game down though if you've never played it. Since the SNES Classic is incredibly hard to find now, the best way to play the game nowadays is through an emulator and finding the ROM. Another cool thing about the game was that that the party list included getting to play as Bowser, and Peach. A lot of that might have to do with Square-Enix sharing the rights to the game, but hopefully it'll eventually be available for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo has only ever made it available on the Wii eShop, and Super Nintendo Classic. Despite being one of the most popular games on the system, as far as I know anyways! To this day its probably one of the most ignored of the major SNES releases.
It followed up massive hits like Final Fantasy VI, and Chrono Trigger. This is when Square was at their absolute best, creating some of the best JRPGs ever. It was also a Square developed JRPG based on the Mario license.
What made the game so great was one, it's artistic style was really unique for the time, it also looked amazing for an SNES title, and still holds up incredibly well 24 years later. It came out near the end of the SNES life, and I think may have been one of the last major titles for the system? The Nintendo 64 would come out in America that September, so Nintendo was focusing all of its resources on that system at that point. This was one of my favorite Super Nintendo games.
